Amato "OXFORD — A 35-year-old Peach Farm Road resident was killed Monday morning when his motorcycle struck a car on a notorious stretch of Route 188 known as Schreiber's bend, the site of dozens of accidents in recent years. James V. Mauri was driving south around 9:06 a.m. when he lost control of his Harley-Davidson Sportster and collided with a 1992 Mazda driven by Augustino Fillippone, 55, of South Cliff Street in Ansonia. Fillippone was heading north, according to State Trooper John Butkevicius, of Troop A in Southbury, who is investigating the accident. Mauri, who was thrown from his motorcycle, was taken by Oxford Ambulance Association to Griffin Hospital in Derby, where he was pronounced dead." "He was in cardiac arrest when we arrived at the scene," said Jerry Schwab, executive director of Oxford Ambulance. An autopsy is planned today at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington. "It doesn't appear he was wearing his helmet," Butkevicius said of Mauri. He said Fillippone refused medical attention. The accident occurred on a severe curve on Route 188. It's called Schreiber's bend because it runs along Paul Schreiber's Quaker Farms Road farm. "I was at the farm this morning and saw the emergency vehicles fly by," said Schreiber, a former first selectman. "When I heard them stop a short distance away, I knew it was probably at the same spot." Continue article
