Motorcycle accident claims two lives

By: Charlie Smith and Robert Lowell

"WESTBROOK (July 19, 2006): A South Portland man and a Brunswick man were killed in separate motorcycle accidents on roads in Westbrook and Buxton last week. The two men are the 11th and 12th motorcyclists killed in accidents in Maine this year.

In both cases, the driver of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Police said the motorcyclist killed in Buxton died as a result of head injuries sustained in the crash, but police in Westbrook had not yet determined the cause of death in the accident there.

In Westbrook, Dale Carver, 50, lost control of his Kawasaki motorcycle late in the morning of July 14 on a corner on Austin Street, according to Westbrook Police Chief Paul McCarthy. Carver had turned onto Austin Street from East Bridge Street, and was speeding before going off the road at the turn, said McCarthy, adding that no other vehicles were involved.

Westbrook Police Officer Inger Cyr was the first officer to respond to the scene, and said that two eyewitnesses reported Carver had been speeding, passing one of them moments before running off the road in the area of 92 Austin St."
