Motorcycle Accidents Raising Questions About Helmets
By: KAKE News

"A dangerous day on Wichita roads. Two separate motorcycle crashes send three people to the hospital. None of the injured were wearing helmets. Now, new questions about whether the state should make motorcyclists wear protective head gear.

The first accident happened near Mount Vernon and Volutsia. A car collides with a motorcycle sending the two riders flying through the air. The male driver sustains non-life threatening injuries, but a woman was seriously hurt.

Later in the day, another accident happens near Pawnee and Broadway.

A female driver heads out of the Wall-Mart parking lot in a truck, and a motorcycle slams into the side. The bike catches fire, and the motorcyclist is pinned under his ride.

Several witnesses rush to the 24-year-old man's side. He was rushed to the hospital with serious to critical injuries. That man has now died.

It seems like lately motorcycle accidents are happening left and right with injuries more serious than they could be because of a lack of helmet use.

In fact, about 10 years ago, only 20 people died in Kansas motorcycle accidents. Last year, the number jumped to 35, only 20 percent of those people wearing a helmet.

Some people now think it's time for a change in Kansas law to require motorcyclists to wear helmets."
