Motorcycle Accident on I-287

Motorcycle accident on I-287 kills 22-year-old man

By: Desiree Grand

"WHITE PLAINS — A 22-year-old man was killed when he was thrown from his motorcycle yesterday evening on Interstate 287, state police said, shutting down the eastbound lanes for several hours.

The victim's identify was not released pending notification of his family.

The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. as the man was traveling eastbound between exits 5 and 6 and lost control of his motorcycle while changing lanes, said state police Investigator John Vescio. The motorcycle slid under the guardrail, the wheel getting lodged between the posts, and was split in two. The victim was thrown from the motorcycle and one of its pieces shot across three lanes of the highway, Vescio said.

Police were still investigating whether any other vehicles were involved.

According to a witness, speed was a factor in the accident, Vescio said.

All eastbound lanes of I-287 were closed while police investigated the crash, causing severe traffic delays. The roadway was reopened about 11:30 last night.

During the summer months, motorcycle fatalities and accidents increase. In June, two Westchester men died in motorcycle accidents, and a Brooklyn man died on the Saw Mill River Parkway when his bike hit a guardrail and broke in half."
